چکیده

Recent developments are (meta)reviewed in the applications of Wigner functions to describe the observed single particle spectra and twoparticle Bose-Einstein (or Hanbury Brown – Twiss) correlations in high energy particle and nuclear physics, with examples from hadron-proton and Pb + Pb collisions at CERN SPS.

Monte Carlo sampling of Wigner functions and surface hopping quantum dynamics

Wigner functions are functions on classical phase space, which are in one-to-one correspondence to square integrable functions on configuration space. For molecular quantum systems, classical transport of Wigner functions provides the basis of asymptotic approximation methods in the high energy regime. The article addresses the sampling of Wigner functions by Monte Carlo techniques. The approxi...

Wigner distribution functions for complex dynamical systems: the emergence of the Wigner-Boltzmann equation.

The equation of motion for the reduced Wigner function of a system coupled to an external quantum system is presented for the specific case when the external quantum system can be modeled as a set of harmonic oscillators. The result is derived from the Wigner function formulation of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory. It is shown how the true self-energy for the equation of motion i...

Entropy and wigner functions

The properties of an alternative definition of quantum entropy, based on Wigner functions, are discussed. Such a definition emerges naturally from the Wigner representation of quantum mechanics, and can easily quantify the amount of entanglement of a quantum state. It is shown that smoothing of the Wigner function induces an increase in entropy. This fact is used to derive some simple rules to ...

How to model quantum plasmas

Traditional plasma physics has mainly focused on regimes characterized by high temperatures and low densities, for which quantummechanical effects have virtually no impact. However, recent technological advances (particularly on miniaturized semiconductor devices and nanoscale objects) have made it possible to envisage practical applications of plasma physics where the quantum nature of the par...

Ground state energies of quantum dots in high magnetic fields: A new approach

We present a new method for calculating ground state properties of quantum dots in high magnetic fields. It takes into account the equilibrium positions of electrons in a Wigner cluster to minimize the interaction energy in the high field limit. Assuming perfect spin alignment the many-body trial function is a single Slater determinant of overlapping oscillator functions from the lowest Landau ...
